Parish Picnic
Sunday - June 6, 2004
by Molly Donovan
On June 6, after months of hard work and planning by the Community Life Committee, the St. James Parish Picnic finally arrived. This was a day for the families of St. James to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon and come together with the other members of their parish. Though the rainy weather interfered with the day, the picnic still was enjoyable in the Parish Center.
The day started off with a mass, said by Father Shepard. After mass, the afternoon's activities were to begin. The Schroeder family, Ines, David, Daniel, Isabella and Greg, decided that today would "be a fun day to share with the church community."
Children were able to play games and have fun. "There were games for the kids; baseball and a bouncy ball to play with," said Mr. Schroeder. He also said that even though the weather was disappointing it was still a fun day.
A barbecued lunch was served, hamburgers and hot dogs. The lunch was made with the help of Joe Clarizio. "We cooked 200 burgers and 200 hot dogs today," Joe said. They also served 30 pounds of potato salad.
While people were enjoying their lunch, they could listen to music being played by the Todaro brothers. Peter Giacobbe said that he enjoyed the music. "They played a lot of Beatles songs."
Peter Gish said that he likes going to church activities and being involved with the church. "I love to serve at mass, every Saturday, and I was very glad to attend this," Peter also added.
The day seemed to have a good turnout. One hundred thirty tickets were sold. Carol Arcari, a member of the Community Life Committee, said, "even though the weather was disappointing, it was easier inside. I almost prayed for the rain."
That afternoon families were able to come together and enjoy being with others in their church community.
