St. James Music Ministry

Through the capacity of music to enhance the liturgical text and create a prayerful and reverent atmosphere for worship, the choirs and musicians of the Office of Music Ministry provides music for weekend Masses, Holy Day services, weddings and funerals throughout the year. Indeed, the entire assembly participates in the music ministry of the parish in praising our Lord through the songs and hymns sung during these liturgies. In support of these efforts, some members of our parish family also lend their special gifts by participating regularly in one of the following ensembles.

    Junior Choir

This wonderful opportunity for children to better understand and know the presence of God through music is open to kids in grades three to eight. No experience is necessary as the children are taught the fundamentals of voice and reading music. All music is learned in rehearsals. The Junior Choir meets weekly and provides music at select Sundays during the school year and certain Holy Day celebrations and special liturgies.

Please call Joy O'Sullivan at 529-8655, ext. 17 with any questions.

    Wind & String Ensemble

The Wind & String Ensemble is made up of talented instrumentalists who meet once a month to practice for major liturgies (Christmas, Easter, Palm Sunday) and concerts, and to work on the Dixieland Band repertoire. Because, as I say, "Every church should have a Dixieland Jazz Band."

Next Wind & String Ensemble Rehearsal:

  • April 28 at 7:00PM

    Parish Choir

is open to all high school age and adult singers. All music is learned in rehearsals. Please join us in this rewarding ministry!

United in voice and spirit, the Parish Choir provides choral music at one Sunday Mass per week and also provides special music for Holy Day services and during Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and the Easter season. The Parish Choir is comprised of men and women of all ages and meets weekly during the school year.

Singers need not have extensive musical training and may join the Parish Choir at any time during the year. Along with the regular parish choir schedule, the Office of Music Ministry also welcomes the addition of choir singers who may only be able to participate in Holy Day Masses in the Christmas and Easter seasons. Please note announcements in the bulletin for rehearsals dates and times or contact the Office of Music Ministry for further information.

Lift Up Our Hearts With Song
The Charter Oak Flutes Fall Flute Recital 2003

    A Review by Emily

Last Sunday’s flute recital was a completely new experience for me. I walked into the church thinking that the music I was about to hear would be ordinary and predictable. However, as I soon discovered, my first impression of the recital was completely off. Every note played by Charter Oak Flutes was uplifting and soothing.

The first song I was able to hear, “Praise the Lord with Flutes,” was lighthearted and jovial. I found myself tapping my feet to the quick beat on the floor and feeling completely at ease. The next song was “Sleep, My Baby” which was played as a Psalm with the beautiful voice of Virgina Church leading. As a Psalm it had a soft and sweet sound. It was also played as an arrangement, which had perfect harmony. “Memories of East Tennessee” was the next song that stood out to me. It was a mixture between the solemn sounds much like “Sleep, My Baby” and the quick and light sounds of “Praise the Lord with Flutes.” I immediately could see images of all the most beautiful things on this earth when I heard this music. It truly helped me to forget all everyday problems that I had and to absorb the exquisite sounds of the flutes.

On my way out of the church I came across Virgina Church’s voice teacher as well as an experienced musician. I asked her what she thought of the recital and I received the answer I was expecting; it was diverse and light as well as completely enjoyable. The Charter Oaks Flutes was a truly talented group and I encourage everyone to attend next time they come to Saint James Church.
